Freshwaters Annual Essay Writing Competition

The Freshwaters Annual Essay Writing Competition is one of the FAYF’s initiatives to empower young Africans through participation in advocacy, sensitization and academic writing. By focusing on holistic approaches that integrate economic, educational, and social dimensions, we cultivate a generation of leaders who are prepared to identify problems, debate on solutions and innovate for a sustainable future.

The essay writing competition aims at positively impacting the lives of African youth, fostering community engagement, and promoting sustainable development.

Essay Topic: Political Disengagement among African Youths: Addressing the Crisis of Leadership and Civic Participation

Competition Summary

The issue of political disengagement among African youths has become a growing concern, with many young people feeling disillusioned by the current state of leadership and governance.

What do you believe are the root causes of this crisis, and how can youths be re-engaged in the political and civic spheres?

What solutions can be explored to foster a sense of responsibility and participation among African youths to drive a positive social impact?

Essay Topic: “Political Disengagement among African Youths: Addressing the Crisis of Leadership and Civic Participation” 

Prizes 

1st Prize: Certificate and ₦100,000 cash (Or it dollar equivalent)

2nd Prize: Certificate and ₦50,000 cash (Or it dollar equivalent)

Evaluation Criteria

How Essays will be judged:

  1. 50% points will be allocated to quality of the essay; clarity of expression, spelling and grammar, originality of thought and conformity to contest rules.
  2. 50% points will be allocated to the level of online community engagement on the participant’s essay post in terms of likes, comments and engagements. (NB: Your essay and profile will be posted on our Facebook and Instagram pages and link to the post will be mailed to you in less than 24hrs after submission for you to access) 

Guidelines

  1. Essay can be submitted by any African youth between 15-30 years of age.
  2. Essay must be 700 words or less in English and must be typed with your name and essay title included at the top of the first page. (Your name and essay title are not included in the word count limit.)
  3. The essay must be submitted in PDF format only.
  4. Essays must be original and unpublished.
  5. Entries that include plagiarized content or content created by generative AI (such as ChatGPT) will be rejected.
  6. Essays must be written by one person. Co-authored essays are not accepted.
  7. Your document name should be your full name. 

Deadline

Entries must be received on or before November 24th, 2024 (23:59 pm West African Time).

Winners will be announced and contacted on December 2nd, 2024
